Information We Need at Genesis Behavioral Health
In 1966, mental health services in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region were difficult to come by. Through the vision and determination of Dr. George “Pete” Harris and others, the doors opened at the Lakes Region Mental Health Center (changed to Genesis The Counseling Group in 1992 and to Genesis Behavioral Health (GBH) in 2000) opened on July 1, 1966. With the sole staff member serving as both executive director and clinical psychologist, client numbers increased 600 percent in the first four months.
Changes Over Time

In the 1980s and ‘90s, GBH increased the scope of services offered. Community Support Services for people with chronic mental illness were established in 1980. Two years later, the housing program began and it expanded again in 1986. Increasing emphasis has also been placed on providing services to the elderly. Children and Family Services has also increased dramatically, with summer programs and staff in several local schools. Therapy has moved from long-term to more focused terms. Clients with more severe needs are now provided services in community settings such as home and school.

Today

As we look back to those who made the vision a reality, we celebrate our past and present Boards of Directors, Employees, and Clients. It is through the support that we receive from these dedicated heroes that we are able to continue to make a difference in the lives of so many.
