Treating children up to 18 years old
Children of every age, from toddlers to young adults, can have mental health problems. In fact, it’s estimated that nearly 20 percent of children have some type of behavioral or emotional problems.
At GBH, we believe that children with mental health problems can live happy, productive lives by receiving early intervention. We work with schools, physicians, and other groups to help children receive the treatment they deserve. We provide a wide range of behavioral health services to children, adolescents, young adults and their families. It is important to include families in the treatment plan whenever possible.

Each child’s child’s treatment is individualized. Some children may only need a few counseling sessions. Others face more difficult challenges. At GBH, each child’s treatment plan is designed to address that child’s unique needs. A treatment plan may include:
- Individual Therapy: This one-on-one service helps decrease distress, reduce psychological symptoms, and improve positive behaviors.
- Case Management: More complex cases may need services from several organizations. Case Management coordinates the services between different agencies in the community.
- Medical Services: This includes psychiatric assessment, medication needs, and ongoing medication follow-up. The medical team is active in the Child and Family treatment team. When medications are needed to address psychiatric symptoms, our staff psychiatrist will prescribe them. Monitoring the medication and providing information about the child’s diagnosis and medication is part of this service.
- Group Therapy: Led by a therapist or group leader, group members learn new ways to deal with problems. In Group Therapy, members can work to improve their skills dealing with others on self-esteem issues.
- TREK Program: An adventure-based treatment program offered several times during the year. TREK helps young people develop positive peer relationships, build their self-esteem, and develop positive problem solving skills. The program includes outdoor adventure-based activities.
- Trauma Intervention Program (TIP): TIP is a collaboration between GBH, New Beginnings, and Child and Family Services of NH. Clinicians provide trauma assessment and evidenced-based treatment to children and youth who’ve been impacted by trauma. An outreach worker coordinates community efforts to reach out to all child victims of trauma.
- Adolescent Treatment Initiative (ATI): Clinicians work with youth ages 12 to 18 who are experiencing problems with drug and alcohol use. Youth will benefit from a continuum of services including screening, assessment and treatment.
- Family Therapy: Working together, family members work to improve how the family functions, communicates, and deals with issues and problems.
- Diagnostic and Assessment Services/Psychological Evaluations: These services assist the GBH staff in diagnosising and identifying the treatment needs of the child.
- Mental Illness Management Service (MIMS): These services are provided in the community, at home, in school and in other day-to-day settings. This helps the children learn and practice new skills where they live and play.
- Respite: Provides short-term relief for parents by offering a break from the pressure of raising a child with serious emotional disturbance
- Over-Night Respite: Placing a child temporarily in the home of an approved respite provider gives parents a break from the intense demands of caring for a child with special needs, while giving the child a positive experience. Respite can be on a planned or emergency basis.
- Emergency/Crisis Response Services: Emergency Services provides 24-hour crisis response through telephone and face-to-face evaluations. The GBH Emergency Services team provides these services.
- Child to Adult Transition: As young people with serious needs move from childhood to adulthood, the services they need may change. As a provider of services to both children and adults, GBH staff can help move the child to the adult services they may need, such as job skills and coaching, and adult counseling.
- Child Impact Services (CIP) A service offered statewide that helps parents understand the impact of divorce and custody issues on children. For more information click here (www.nhcbha.org/cf/ChildrenFirst.cfm)

Within Child and Family Services, more than two dozen professionals with special skills serve GBH clients. They are experienced working with children; many have advanced training; and they all are committed to improving the lives of the children.
- Medical Specialists on the team include on-staff child psychiatrists (MD) who provide psychiatric assessment, and medication evaluation and treatment.
- Outpatient Therapists provide individual, group and family therapy. They also conduct intake assessments and make referrals for additional services including Psychiatric Assessment, Psychological Testing, and Case Management services. In addition to outpatient therapy, our staff Psychologist provides psychological assessment, including cognitive and personality assessment.
- Case Managers can serve several roles for children and their families. They help children with emotional disorders and their families to mobilize, coordinate, and maintain a range of services and resources that best meet the family’s needs. Case managers also provide individual, group and family therapy in the home and community, as well as Mental Illness Management Services (MIMS).
- Family Support Specialists work closely with the treatment team to provide MIMS (Mental Illness Management Services) in the community. Whether at school, at home, or on an outing, they help the child develop and use the skills they need to achieve their treatment goals in real-world settings.
- Court Liaison Case Manager is a specialist working with the courts on cases involving children who are GBH clients. The Case Manager may also help clients’ families connect with other GBH services, as needed.
