When aging problems and mental health issues combine, life can be very difficult indeed. When a spouse dies, loneliness and depression can soon weaken the remaining spouse. An elder may not recognize they have a problem but a family member, neighbor or friend may.

Services in the Community

At GBH, our specialists are trained to help older residents (60 years or older) remain as independent as possible. Services can be provided in our office or wherever the elder lives, whether in their own home, housing complexes or group homes. Staff at hospitals or nursing homes may contact GBH to ask for patient consultation. Visiting nurses or other home care providers may see a need and ask for an assessment.

Range of Services

A full range of community mental health services are available to elders. Our elder specialists can:

• Assess the elder’s mental health needs;
• Refer the elder to other agencies if needed;
• Provide Case Management to oversee all services received;
• Arrange for counseling services;
• Find opportunities to join in community activities;
• Help complete forms and obtain benefits;
• Obtain psychiatric and medication services
